When my wife and moved into a little cottage that was more than a hundred years old, we were so excited. It was spring time and we watched as the deer quietly ate apples from our large apple trees in the front yard. We enjoyed sitting in the shade of a large oak tree in a two person swing.

It was in a word, perfect, that was until summer rolled into town with 90 degree heat beating down on our home. It had central heating and air, but unfortunately it did not seem to matter. Just as rapidly as the cool air entered the room, it vanished again in an almost supernatural way.

We first realized that there was literally no insulation in the attic. The attic was nothing more than rafters that were crudely built in the late 1900’s and no previous owner had seen fit to install insulation.

So, we immediately covered the entire attic with insulation, installed an attic fan and saw the amount of energy escaping the house diminish. However, it still wasn’t enough. The walls were paper thin and did not have any insulation either.

After having some windows replaced, we realized that the only option we had was to look at installing exterior wall coatings that would further insulate the home. We had looked at installing insulation in the walls, but the price quotes we received were outlandish.

Exterior wall coatings actually insulate the interior of the home while protecting it from harmful water leakage that is so prone in older homes. Over all, we still enjoy our little cottage and we are glad that technology has helped make it comfortable.

When it comes to buying a casement window online one of the things you will notice very quickly is they are much more than a regular window. One of the things you won’t notice right off the bat is that they are also more expensive and more time consuming to put in as well and that is why getting the best deal you can on one is what everybody wants.

The first thing you need to understand about getting a bay window is that you need to make sure it is in great shape before you buy it. The reason why you need to make sure it is in great shape is because too many people buy cheap bay windows and then come to find out the reason they are cheap is because most of the framing is still in the house that the bay window was taken out of. When you are missing the main frame from the window then you will have a very hard time getting that window back into another opening unless you rebuild the frame so that the window doesn’t just fall out of the opening. What most people are unaware of is the fact that the bigger a window is the stronger a frame it will need and that is exactly why you should not buy a bay window that doesn’t have all the things you need.

Glass shops – Glass shops are notorious for buying window units that are not the right size and that is why you need to come here first. All you need to do is ask a glass shop if they have a bay window that is the size you are looking for and see if they would want to get rid of it and make some money. Normally they will say yes and then just put the unit in the back of your truck.

Large hardware stores – If you want to get a bay window for a very cheap price then you need to go to large hardware stores and see what they have. Normally they will have window units sitting in the back that were dented from the trucks, or maybe have a small broken piece on the frame but the reason you need to look at these is because they might work for you with just a little bit of fixing to them.

You can actually leave your storm windows in all year long. It will cut down on your energy costs in the winter and summer months. There are some people in the north who remove their storm windows in the summer months and store them until they need them again come the following winter. There is nothing wrong with that at all. If you leave them up all year you can save on your energy bills. These windows will help to keep the cool air inside the house during the summer months. Even though you are from northern states you still can get some pretty high temperatures in the summer time.

In the south using storm windows all year also makes sense. It does get cold for a short period of time in the winter and once in a while a huge storm made up of hail and high winds can pass through. If you remove your storm windows you will find that you don’t have the insulating properties or the protection any more.

Where ever you live you may want to try keeping your storm windows up all year. If you want to you can take them down to make sure they are well maintained and cleaned. If you do store your windows until you will need them next protect them from damaging weather. You want to have your storm windows last for a very long time. With the proper care your windows will be set for a long life.

There is less work involved if you leave your storm windows up yearly. Once a year take them down and check the caulking to make sure it is holding up to the conditions. It is easy to caulk a storm window, even if it is an insulated one. This will help to preserve the strength of the storm windows. Whether you live in the north or the south you should consider the money and time if you leave the windows in place.

You can find dealers of storm windows online and get some really great prices. They will take measurements to make sure the windows will fit properly.

Stencilling is a very quick and easy technique for applying motifs and designs. Careful setting out is required to get the patterns level and at even spacing.

Probably the best way to start is with a stencil kit from a decorating shop. You can buy ready-cut stencils, fast-drying stencil paints (although ordinary emulsion paint can also be used) and special stencil brushes, which are used with a stippling action so that the paint does not get under the edges of the stencil.

Traditionally, stencils are made from oiled stencil card, but clear acetate is becoming popular because it is transparent and therefore easier to align.

If you cut your own stencil, work from a tracing of a very simple design. Children’s books are good sources of designs. It is helpful to have a separate stencil for each colour.

Working to guidelines, tape the stencil in place with strips of masking tape. Apply the paint to the brush sparingly, dab excess paint on to scrap paper, then work from the edges of the stencil towards the middle using a circular stippling motion of the brush. Allow each colour to dry before proceeding to the next.

The first rule about windows is to paint any openable ones that are accessible to intruders as early as possible in the day so that they are dry and closable at night.

The order of painting casements and sashes should be followed closely. Do use at least two brushes – 25 and 50mm (1 and 2 in) wide – on window frames; you will find you are able to work much more quickly and accurately by matching the narrow and slightly wider brushes to relevant surface widths.

Cutting-in around glass is the slowest part of the job. However, the idea is not to keep the paint off the glass altogether, but to take a margin of the gloss coat about 2mm on to it. By doing so, you will prevent any condensation running down the glass from getting into the framework and causing it to rot.

If you have a steady hand, then you will be able to do this without smudging the glass. If you have an angled brush, it will be even easier. If you can’t keep a steady line, use masking tape or a paint shield. Should you choose tape, remove it before the gloss coat dries. If you leave it too long, as you pull away the tape it might bring some of the paint film with it.

Scaffolding has been commonly used in construction projects since the era of the Roman Empire, and it is one of the most popular construction aids in today’s modern world. There are a lot of things that can be achieved easily with the help of quality scaffold system. Although it has many advantages, scaffolding also has disadvantages. In this part, we are going to discuss advantages and disadvantages of scaffolding and how to get maximum benefit from this marvelous construction aid.

The first and probably the most prominent advantage of using scaffolding to help you complete different construction tasks is safety. Scaffolding provides additional safety measures when working on relatively tall areas or building tall properties. Since different sets of scaffolding can be constructed as one, you can easily install scaffolding and complete various tasks along the construction project without hassle.

Another advantage of scaffolding is of course its flexibility. Scaffolding consists of different parts and sets that can be installed differently, allowing you to reach difficult spots and cover different areas of the construction project all at once. You can even set scaffolding to be several meters high and use the scaffolding to complete the entire construction project from A to Z.

The only big disadvantage of using scaffolding to help you complete different construction tasks is the extra time needed to install the scaffolding and check its safety. You need to be completely sure that the scaffolding you use is entirely safe for workers in order to avoid unwanted hazards and potential accidents in the future. To ensure safety, proper checking and double checking are required.

With the help of professional service provider, the installation process of scaffolding can be completed swiftly. The right team of experienced experts can help you install scaffolding within hours – or days if you are working on larger construction project – allowing you to start the work immediately and save substantial amount of time. The extra cost of hiring professional team of installers will certainly be worth every penny; not only will they install scaffolding properly, they will also double check to make sure the platforms are safe.

If you consider redefining the space in which you move every time you set your mind on cooking or preparing delicious meals or favorite dishes, then you might want to take into account a few tips to redesign your kitchen. That’s right: you guessed it – it is all about kitchen when it comes to the special space in your home that delivers you the pleasure of cooking.

As this space is quite familiar to you, you know by now what is needed either to replace or to simply relocate. In case the color of the furniture is out of date or it is simply getting on your nerves (!), maybe you would think of getting a new one.

So the first tip is to look for specialized magazines that offer new ideas and new ways of seeing the space of your kitchen in different and innovative lights.

Another tip would be online research. All you have to do is keep browsing for various ideas regarding ways of remodeling your kitchen. Not to forget that searching for ideas could even bring you inspiration into having your own ideas – where you may have been undecided before.

Now if we count the fact that each kitchen has its own space and sizes regarding the measures, then another tip to consider would be to take the right measuring whenever it comes to replacing the cabinets and the ways to position the large appliances. You might also need to buy new home appliances and in this case you would have to be very exact in taking the right measurements.

A redesign, per se, implies knowledge and plenty of research. If you do not have the time or the right skills, which shouldn’t make anyone feel less wise (there are persons to have an innate sense of being “left-handed”), then asking for the professional advice may be recommended.

In this way you will have peace of mind about the measurements and feel more confident with a professional assisting you with remodeling plans. A team of professional decorators, remodelers and workers will ensure things get done right the first time.

You can find contractors and interior designers at home supercenters and/or in open exhibitions that are displayed at various times of the year. Browse the many displays at exhibitions to help give you an idea of who you may want to entrust and hire for your kitceh remodeling. If you don’t have local house and home exhibitions, then ask around at your local hardware store for references. Word of mouth is still the best form of advertisement.

And last, but not least – consider your budget. I’m sure that no one would set one’s mind for this kind of change in one’s life without considering the possibility of spending money. So related to this important aspect, you have to know exactly what the limits of your budget are. It’s always wise to leave some emergency funds back, in case of unforseable issues such as having to redo plumbing or electrical.

We all want our homes to look great, or better said – we want to be the envy of the neighborhood. Updating and remodeling your home is a good thing but you should take into consideration the type of project that will give you a return on your money, when it is time to sell. Aren’t all home improvements good? – You may ask. Not necessarily. Sometimes it goes beyond the type of room you are improving; sometimes it comes down to material and trends.

So how do you know which projects will be good to tackle? Usually the most used rooms are the ones that will give you a better return when improved. Rooms such as kitchen and bathrooms. While updating that old and dingy kitchen will benefit your pocket when it is time to sell, adding a second kitchen will not. Moreover, a second kitchen on a single family home will discourage some buyers. Unless you are adding a kitchenette to the basement which you are converting into an entertaining room with bar and amenities, a second kitchen will scare buyers away. And even that converted basement is not a priority on rooms that will give you the best return. That basement will become a bonus.

Watch for important trends too. Taking our example of the kitchen, if you are going to remodel it, remodel with appliances that buyers are looking for. Are you staying in your home for more than 10 years? Then do not go crazy with the appliance craze – because in 10 years your remodeled kitchen will be dated anyway. Buy quality appliances that are energy efficient and forget about the color, or if they are stainless steel or white. Buyers are going nuts for stainless steel and gourmet kitchens, but is the trend going to be the same over 10 years from now?
Bathrooms should be remodeled with a clean and neutral palette. Invest in quality fixtures that last. Do not go for the latest European look which will cost you thousands of dollars and will become obsolete. Buy the best quality fixtures you can afford in your budget, as there are some cheap and half-plastic fixtures out there that will break easy.

The workforce has changed in the past decade and more people are working from their homes. Having a room for an office will give you a return on your investment, but having expensive furnishings in it will not, even if you sell the house with the office furniture included.

A pool is a wonderful thing to have and enjoy in those hot summer days, but it truly does not give you a return on your money. Some buyers are put off by pools because they worry about insurance and their children. Unless you live in an upscale neighborhood where having a pool can make or break a sale, it will not matter otherwise.

Other rooms that will not give you a return on investment are special rooms such as gyms, wine rooms, theaters and other rooms tailored just to a particular taste. A good size family room will sell better than a fancy theater.

These are some tips to take into consideration before remodeling some rooms in your home. Take into consideration the time that you are planning to stay in your home as well as material cost and trends before making a decision.

When you own a home, the projects to maintain and improve its appearance are endless. Weekends turn into trips to the home improvement store. The satisfaction after a project well done fuels your desire to start the next project. There is always something to be done, even if you bought a brand new construction. Once the project is finished, all that planning and measuring, type of materials, and any research that you did, gets lost. That information may result valuable later, so why not keep it?

By keeping a home improvement diary, you can log important information on your projects. This diary can take the shape of a written journal, recorded video, PC journal, and step-by-step photographs of the project. You can also do a combination of all.

You can use a binder, a journal, a scrapbook type, an album, a photo box, or anything that you can think of. The important issue here is that you are able to organize it and can find the information easily when you need it.

A home improvement diary can help you in many ways. It can give you ideas for other future projects. It can track cost of materials and labor, and at the same time suggest other ways of saving money. By looking at what you did in the past, you can get ideas on how to do it better and/or cheaper. It can also help you keep records of expenses and improvements to your home to use when it is time to sell your home. It will help you price it, and it will help you with taxes.

What should you include in a home improvement diary? The answer varies – anything that you might need for reference later. Start by logging in the date of the project. You can include receipts of material purchase, model and serial number of any appliances, estimates, labor bills, description and samples of materials used, work plan, any important notes on research to do the project, contacts, references for projects, and any important reference to a particular gap or difficult point of the project. If you hire any workers or contractors, include their contact information and the type of work they did – as well as any disputes you may have had with them.

This could prove useful if any lawsuits arise later. Attach photographs of the difference phases of the project too. Organize your diary by room or area, for example, living room, dining room … Use a summary sheet in the front so you can log the most relevant information about the project for quick review. Use envelopes to save receipts and estimates, as well as bills – attach these envelopes.

These are some ideas that you can easy implement on your home improvement diary. Use your creativity according to what works best for you.

The increasing cost of energy and heat is draining our pockets. We may feel the pinch more in these tough economic times. Looking for alternatives to save money is necessary to keep our quality of life. If you are facing high electric, oil, or gas bills maybe it is time to look at other ways to heat your home. You may consider a pellet stove or a wood stove. Either of those will save you a considerable amount of money during the year.

Although they may look similar in appearance, these stoves work very differently. They both save you money, are easy to operate, and give you good heat during the winter season. They are both economical to use. In addition, they give a cozy atmosphere to your home.

A wood stove is installed with your chimney or an exhaust tube that will vent outside. It requires wood to be burned to produce heat. The wood must be seasoned (dry with no moisture in it) and you can either buy the wood in cords or chop it yourself. A benefit to you is that you can find wood available free, so the cost will be $0.00. A cord of wood will cost you about $175 and in a normal season, you will use about 3 or 4 cords of wood that is for the entire year. So even when you buy the wood it beats the price of heating gas or oil.

You will need to refuel the stove by adding more wood, and clean the ashes daily. You will need a place to store your wood, also. If you chop your own wood take into consideration that different types of wood burn faster or slower, and create creosote (a residue that deposits in your chimney and must be cleaned to reduce fire risk) which must be cleaned.

A pellet stove uses electricity as it must be plugged into the wall (about $9 per month for a standard model) and it does not need to be installed to your chimney, it could be vented with a pipe through the wall in any room. The area that it heats depends on the type of stove you buy. You can get one for an area of 800, 1200, 1500, 1800, and 2000 plus square feet. It will depend on the size of your home. As the name suggests, the pellet stove uses compacted pellets as fuel. You can fit a 40-pound bag of pellets in the compartment and they are released to be burned. You control the amount of pellets to be released, that in turn will control the heat.

The pellet stove has a motor and blowers to disperse the heat. That is why it needs electricity to run. A benefit is that it produces less air pollution than a wood stove. If you have asthma, a pellet stove would be best for you. It is also easy to operate as it has an igniter button to push to start the fire. It is economical, too. A 40 lb. bag of pellets will cost you about $4-$5, and in normal winter conditions, you will spend about $500.00 for the whole season. The pellets are made of compacted wood, but there are also models that take pellets made of corn, soybean, wood shavings, and other organic materials for fuel. You can buy one that takes wood pellets and corn pellets, in case there is a shortage of pellets in your area, which may happen.

These are some of the benefits of changing to a wood or pellet stove to heat your home. In addition, there are government rebates that you may qualify for, as you are saving energy. It is worth looking into this alternative.
